For this task, we had to complete a textual analysis for a magazine front cover, poster and trailer (everyone in the group in total 12 pieces). We had to comment on the connotations of Mise-en-scene, Typography, Sound etc and link it to the horror genre.
POSTER ANALYSIS
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS: POSTER
TITLE: UNFRIENDED RELEASE DATE: MAY 2015 DIRECTOR: LEO GABRIABZE GENRE: HORROR, MYSTERY & SUSPENSE PRODUCTION COMPANIES: BAZELEVES COMPANY BLIMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS DISTRIBUTED BY: UNIVERSAL PICTURES MAIN CAST: RENEE OLSTEAD – JESS JACOB WYSOCKI – KEN COURTNEY HALVERSON - VAL WILLIAM PELTZ -ADAM HEATHER SOSSAMAN – LAURA SHELLEY HENNIG - BLAIRE ABOUT: Unfriended is about a group of teenagers who find their online video group chat is been monitored by a supposed glitch. It isn’t until the glitch claims to be one their friend Laura played by Heather Sossaman who committed suicide exactly a year ago as a result of someone posting an unflattering video of her. The teens find their lives and secrets been threatened if they confess who posted the video. |
Denotation:
This is a horror movie poster; it has a distorted close up of a victim who appears to be screaming. The title is written in bold white with the tag line written in red. Some text has been written in a search box that tells a bit more about the movie.
Mise-en-scene:
The background of this poster is black, which connotes death and fear of the unknown. Fear of the unknown is further heightened through the covering of the victims eyes as we don’t exactly know who it is. The victims face is cover by static which plays on the fear of never truly been safe online as someone could be watching you. The gapping mouth of the victim further creates fear for the audience, as we don’t know what they are screaming at. This is common in scary movie as it far worse for the audience to think up a scary scenario than it is to see one.
Typography:
Some of the text is written in a search box, which adds to the tagline “revenge comes online’. The tagline is written in red, which is a common convention for horror movies as the red connotes fear, blood and anger, common themes associated with the genre. The title is written in big bright white, this is not usually used in horror poster but it makes the title stand out of the dark, glitchy background and works well with the mostly black and white theme.
Target Audience:
It is clear to see that the target audience for this movie are teens and people who grew up during the time social media became a big deal as the movie was done using all forms of social networking from Facebook to Skype and YouTube to tell its story. This movie suits the target audience perfectly as it highlights serious issues like trolling (which led to the suicide of Blaire) and the effects it has on people and how easy it is to be a troll without meaning to. It also plays on the fear of voyeurism, as we never know who is watching us online and since we spend most of our time online are we really safe? It also turns a common ritual like talking to your friends on Skype to something that can be feared.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS: MOVIE TRAILER
TITLE: DON’T BREATHE RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 2016 DIRECTOR: FEDE ALVAREZ GENRE: HORROR THRILLER PRODUCTION COMPANIES: GHOST HOUSE PICTURES MAIN CAST: STEPHEN LANG – BLIND MAN JANE LEVY – ROCKY DANIEL ZOVATTO – MONEY DYLAN MINNETTE – ALEX NARRATIVE: Three thieves try to rob a supposedly vulnerable old blind man only to get more than they bargained for |
Mise-en-scene:
The trailer is mostly done in dim lighting to reflect that is a horror movie and also because they are in a basement, with flickering lights creating a feeling of abandonment and hopelessness. There is also a corridor scene where the blind aggressor walks past one of his victims, this narrow escape and space invokes a feeling of fear in the audience as the victim is now clearly in imminent danger of been found out. Towards the end, the trailer is shot completely in the dark and night vision allows us to see the terror in the victims faces as they struggle to see in the dark and escape their aggressor.
Camera&Editing:
Wide angle is used a lot at the beginning to show the secluded neighbourhood where the thieves turn victims are going to rob, the wide shot used immediately makes the audience aware that in times of trouble there would be no one to save the future victims. Close up is often used as well, mostly on the victims to show the fear they feel. There is a lot of quick cuts and blackout giving the trailer a fast paced and confusing feel to it, which could infer connotes the fear the victims feels. Panning is only used to when the aggressor is first made know to us, it was used to highlight how close he was to his victims.
Sound:
The trailer starts off with a melancholy piano soundtrack to show the depressed state of one of the victims as she wants to leave her home. The music then changes to a fast paced thudding sound, with a lot of heavy breathing from the victims, which contradicts the title ‘Don’t Breathe’. The thudding music get faster towards adding to the anticipation of the audience before a scream is heard. There is also a lot of whispering and the aggressor talks in a low gruff voice adding to his already threatening exterior
Typography:
There is barely any text in the trailer however when there is, it bold and looks like a smudged white, white red stains and black splats on it, which works well the theme of horror as the colours used are usually found in horror, red connotes blood and danger, black connotes evil and the stained white could connoted the tainting of innocence.
Target Audience:
The rating for this is 15, this movie is not typical overly gory horror movie and mostly aimed at people are interested in thriller as part of the film involves uncovering the secret of the seemingly helpless blind man.

Mise-en-scene:
The lighting of this poster is very dim , it is not very bright and there are no contrasting colours. The main image is dull and does not have any vibrant colour at all , apart from the keyhole. The glowing white key hole contrasts from the darkness of the image. Making the keyhole the point of focus and having more of a dramatic effect. There is no real setting in this poster. The background is black and this is effective in creating more of a mystery. As there is no real idea of the characters background. The non verbal communication of this character is very serious and it looks as if they are malnourished , sick and or depressed. This is because of the intense dark shadow around the eyes and the lack of colour in the face along with the scaling of the face , that connotes these ideas or even death. Black is the main colour in this image and black is a common colour to use for horror posters as it usually connotes death , evil and mystery. The main element is mystery and this links with the film title “the other side of the door”. This poster has an extreme close up of a characters face. From the size of the face and structure of the face it looks like a young male. Only ¾ of the characters face is shown creating mystery. Credits and release dates shown as well as the film title and tagline.

MAGAZINE
Denotation:
The Main image is a mid shot and is a painting rather than a photograph which makes the magazine feel more vintage. The composition of the page is symmetrical.
Mise-en-scene:
The lighting used in this magazine is medium. It is not too dark or too light. The main image is an famous antagonist from a horror movie. The costume follows common conventions such as cuts , blood , vivid eye colour , dirty and black teeth and or none at all. The character is giving direct eye contact to the viewer and conveying a stare. Stares are uncomfortable and yet the character is smiling whilst doing so which relates to the “creepiness” of the main image/antagonist. There is no physical setting , the background is just black. A common color used to connote evil , death and mystery in the horror genre.
Typography:
The masthead is the magazine name and it is the largest text on the page. It’s bold and in a vibrant colour to attract the reader’s attention. The plugs are on either side and not concentrated on one side , this magazine however only has a few. The selling line is short and targets their prime audience (people who love horror movies). The font used is San serif which connotes modern , so you could argue that is an up to date and innovative magazine. All the fonts for the plugs are the same – making sure there is not too much adversity on the front page. There is no main cover line as they are all formatted the same way. A standard barcode is used with the price of the magazine and their logo and release date. All at the bottom left corner.
Target Audience:
The Target audience for this magazine would most likely be teenagers and adults aged 16-26.

Title: Nightmare on Elm street (2010)
Director: Samuel Bayer Production: New Line Cinema / Platinum Dunes Principle cast: Jackie Earle Haley (Freddy Krueger) / Kyle Gallner (Quentin Smith) / Rooney Mara (Nancy Holbrook) Films origin: A remake of an original that was released in 1984 and directed by Wes Craven. The same story and antagonist. Synopsis: The spectre of a dead child rapist haunts the children of the parents who murdered him, stalking and killing them in their dreams. |
Mise-en-scene:
The lighting used in this trailer is very dark and a dark blue tint is used even in brighter settings to darken the lighting. Darker lighting creates an eerie and sinister atmosphere and develops suspense. The NVC of the protagonists (victims) were all expressing negative feelings and emotions due to uncomfortable and tense body language, facial expressions of pain, fear and confusion. The antagonist when shown looked angry. The costume of the antagonist is a red and black coloured jumper these colours connote blood, anger, danger, evil, death, fear and mystery. All these connotations are common themes and conventions of horror movies and link to the antagonist’s personality and actions. The antagonist has a hand of knives as its weapon (icon) which suggests it’s natural and or deformity.
Sound:
The sound used is both non diagetic and diagetic sound through the trailer playing over each other. The non diagetic sound is mainly children’s voices singing a song with the words “I’ll never sleep again”. On more action packed scenes and shots the score becomes faster paced and builds the intensity of the scene.
Camera:
Camera angles used in the beginning were establishing shots and long shots to introduce the location (industrial factory) then close ups were used on shots whereby the antagonist was using their weapon (hands of knives) and claw marks on the girl’s dress. This makes it more personal and scary (as if you are there). Wide angles were used when Freddie was in the basement to intensify his shadow and show the contrast between the light behind him and the darkness of his silhouette. Birds eye view then a close up was used on the scene whereby the victim was floating in the air. There was a lot of quick cuts and reaction shots which may have been used to create tension and fear.
Genre:
The sub-genre is slasher. The trailer shows a snippet of Freddie’s backstory whereby he was chased by people in his community and they ganged up on him and wanted to persecute him for something he did. Someone lighted a oil tank and threw it inside the factory he locked himself in and he was burned alive. Nobody helped him. The knife hand is a “slasher” type of weapon and the sound effect that knives make is a “slash” noise. Slasher is associated with blood and extreme gore which is a feature in this trailer/movie.
Narrative:
As explained before the backstory is shown leads to some questions being made such as why did they kill him? What did he do? How does he seek out his revenge? These are some examples. These questions engage viewers and create the desire for them to watch the movie to find out what happens.
Location:
Through the establishing shot at the start paired with long takes it shows the first location (factory) and sets the scene. The locations were always shown before the characters and multiple locations were shown due to there being many victims with different scenarios and backgrounds.
Character:
The main victims (protagonists) were presented as weak, scared, unaware and helpless. These representations are used as they are realistic and are the emotions and behaviour you expect if anyone was in the situation the victims were in. The audience also “feel” what characters feel when watching movies so these emotions are associated with horror will make the audience feel that they were really frightened by the movie/trailer therefore enjoy it.
Theme:
The main themes are revenge and vengeance through tormenting.
Pacing:
trailer begins instantly very quick paced on the chasing scene. Then slows down for a few seconds on the less dramatic shots then towards the middle and the end the speed increases greatly to match the speed of the quick cuts then comes to a sudden halt. Like a cliff-hanger effect. Pacing has a positive effect as it intensifies and makes the trailer livelier and as if there is more action.

Denotation:
In this poster you see an image of a female in pyjamas smudging a really big blood stain on the wall in the shape of a creepy face shown using a wide angle shot. The wall is distressed and cracked with patches of dirt spread all around. The title is bold and black with a smudged effect. Credits can be seen at the bottom of the poster showing names and links to different social media sites. Below the title is the tagline, which is written in simple text.
Mise-en-Scene:
The lighting of the poster overall is low key which creates a sense of creepiness and mystery. The wide-angle shot reveals the large bloodstain on the wall, which is in the shape of a face, which could connote death or an evil spirit linking to horror. From the image we see the female is wearing a set of pyjamas. The colour of the pyjamas is off-white, which could connote impurity and sin relating to the horror genre. The position of the character in this image is facing away from the camera. This means that we cannot see her NVC which could result in a sense of mystery. You can also see on the floor the tangled celluloid film which connotes the antagonist of this film as he catches you when you watch the films.
Typography:
The typography of the title is the only different font compared to the credits and tagline. The typography of the title looks blurred and out of focus which links to the film plot and antagonist. The blurriness of the font could connote the fact that we don’t know what would happen in horror films as their plots can take a sharp turn. The font is quite old fashioned and gives a feeling of mystery and is written in black connoting darkness and a ‘sinister’ aura.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this film would be people aged 16-24. It is mainly aimed at teenagers and adults as the film contains scenes of violence and gore.

MAGAZINE
Mise-en-scene:
The lighting of the magazine is very dark and low key with just a candle to show the character’s NVC. The low-key lighting could connote that the magazine has dark content linking to the horror genre. The candle has a creepy effect to the image, as it’s the only source of high key lighting, which could give a false sense of hope, as it is a horror magazine, which usually have dim/dark lighting. The NVC of the woman is very straight showing no emotion giving an eerie sensation connoting malice. You can also see that her eyes are blacked out. This could suggest that she has already passed which is typical of antagonists in horror films. The woman is shown through a medium-close up shot showing her costume. She is wearing a black bridal gown. The bridal gown connotes happiness and love however, the fact that it is black completely destroys this feeling making it seem more malicious and dark. This is quite typical of the horror genre, as they would turn things that you would usually associate with happiness into fear.
Typography:
The font of the title of the film is modern and simple. It is written in white with two letters written in red. The colour red could connote danger or gore suggesting the film is quite gory or that it is very scary. The masthead is also written in white but with red outlining the white. The font looks sharp with pointed tips at the start and end. This could connote violence and is typical of horror antagonists as they usually have an icon/weapon of some sort usually sharp.
Target Audience:
I think the target audience for this magazine would mainly be horror fanatics but also teenager and young adults aged from 17-28. This is because the magazine is very dark and this connotes death and evil which may not be suitable for younger children.

TRAILER
|
Film Title: The Conjuring
Release Date: July 19th 2013 Director: James Wan Film Info: The Conjuring has a sequel called The Conjuring 2. It also has a prequel called Annabelle. Production/Financing Company: New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, Evergreen Media Group Principle Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor. Sub-Genre: Supernatural |
Synopsis: A family of seven move into a new house and start to witness supernatural forces, which are after them. They call an exorcist couple to come and rid them of the evil spirit.
Narrative:
The narrative of the trailer is quite fragmented and put in a non-linear order mainly showing scenes of equilibrium around the start of the trailer and scenes of disequilibrium around the middle and end. The narrative of the story is also told through text shown in the trailer with series of images to add some realism and truth to the film as it is based on a true story.
Location:
The location of the trailer is mainly set in a house in the middle of the woods secluded from civilization shown through a tracking shot.
Characters:
In this trailer, you see there are many children (all females) shown as helpless and victimised. This is shown through various camera shots such as wide angle and many close-ups to show the fear in their NVC. The protagonists in this trailer are a man and a woman which is a subverted stereotype because usually woman are the damsels in distress. The antagonist in this trailer is portrayed to be very violent. You also don’t get to see much of the antagonist which could create some tension within the audience and mystery. This supports the stereotypical horror film because there is an evil antagonist disrupting the equilibrium.
Pacing:
The pacing of the trailer at the start is quite slow which could be used to create a bit of tension. It then changes and becomes very quick adding excitement to keep the audience interested.
Theme:
The trailer shows strong themes of revenge and hate which are both common in the horror genre.
On-Screen Graphics/Captions:
Through the use of on-screen captions, it tells us that the film is based on a true story and is one of the many cases that an exorcist couple had taken up to investigate. This gives a sense of realism which may create real fear within the audience as it could lead them to believe the events in the trailer happened in real life. At the start of the trailer, the style of the trailer is shown through an old filming layout when every so often you would see marks appear on the screen. This could be to make the story believable which could relate to the horror genre as most films will try to base their plot on true stories.
Camera&Editing:
There are lots of wide angle shots and close-up shots used in the trailer. The use of the wide angle shots were mainly to establish the settings of the trailer showing a secluded run-down house in the middle of the woods not near any civilization. This could give a sense of vulnerability which is typical of the horror genre as protagonists usually have little or no help at all. The close-up shots were mainly used on the faces of the characters to show the audience their NVC. Usually when they used the close-up shot, the NVC of the character would either be shocked or scared which portrays fear. This is a key theme in the horror genre as the purpose of a horror film is to create fear within in the audience. There is a lot of quick cuts in the trailer. This could be because they want to create a quick tempo of the trailer showing different scenes quickly and keeping the audience on the edge of their seat.
Music/Sound Effects:
The trailer uses both non-diagetic sound and diagetic sound. A lot of silence is used in the trailer to create tension within the audience and potentially build up a jump scare. The soundtrack of the trailer is very slow and echo-like which is only played at the start and then fades out. This could create feelings of distress and the fading out of the music could connote death. A lot of noises are emphasized in the trailer such as the clock ticking. This could create a tense and creepy atmosphere as it is the only thing you can hear when its playing which it then suddenly stops and abrupt loud screaming, glass breaking and banging are introduced. There are lots of drones and screeches played which gives of an eerie feeling. This would be common in horror films to scare the audience and give them a thrill.

Poster
film title: Sinister
Realease date: October 5 2012 Director: Scott Derrickson Film info: american supernatural horror film ,(sequal-sinister2) Production / financing company: Jason Blum Brian Kavanaugh-Jones Principal cast: Ethan Hawke Juliet Rylance Fred Thompson James Ransone Clare Foley Michael Hall Addario |
Synopsis:
Sinister" is a story made of darkness: mysterious loud bangs in the attic, distant moans from the dead, vulnerable children, an egomaniac crime writer and his long-suffering wife, who is plenty fed up even before she discovers he has moved his family into the same house where horrifying murders took place.
Denotation:
the young girl dressed in the white, the white suggests purity and innocence, which contradicts with the dark blood she is wiping on the wall from her hand, which connotes danger and power, and also the child connotes innocence. The cracks in the walls connote. The face that is painted on the wall with the blood suggests that this girl has evil inside of her. (Evil runs literally through her body). The rope on the floor also represents death (rope is commonly associated with suicide). The cracks on the wall connote damp and deterioration.
Mise en scene:
The young girl is dressed in what looks to be white pyjamas, this expresses her childhood innocence, as pyjamas are commonly/mostly worn by young children. There is not a huge amount of NVC in this poster however from assessing the young girls body positioning and expression, the position of her head is pointing towards the ground, lowering the head also lowers the eyes and hence can be a sign of submission, effectively saying 'I dare not even look at you'. The eyes are typically also lowered here. It can be driven by fear ('you might hurt me if I look at you'). The girls left arm is dangling (without purpose) this suggests lifelessness and exhaustion; the right arm holding the wall suggests dependency and reliance. This colour of the film poster seems bleak and drained, creating a dark and eerie atmosphere. It looks to be in an old room. The damaged film reel suggest that it was used as a sharp artefact to draw blood from the child’s hand, so she could stain the wall.
Typography:
The font used for “sinister” is a sharp, simplistic, semi-bold font, which is slightly out of focus (blurred) and has a drop shadow. The word sinister means to give the impression that something harmful or evil is happening or going to happen.
Under the sinister title it says “ once you see him, anything can see you “, this creates suspicions and fear of the unknown, this suggests that the child is vulnerable and helpless and that she has been targeted by an anonymous being which is depicted in the blood smear on the wall.
Target audience:
Sinister is about a family with young children, I feel that this film targets 25-35 year olds. This is because this is the age period that most people aim to start a family
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rated sinister as a 15 as it contains strong violence and horror.

Sinister is a story made of darkness: mysterious loud bangs in the attic, distant moans from the dead, vulnerable children, an egomaniac crime writer and his long-suffering wife, who is plenty fed up even before she discovers he has moved his family into the same house where horrifying murders took place.
narrative:
The first piece of narrative viewers of the trailer hear is a news report talking about the gruesome murder of a local family, this is the first piece of information the audience get about the plot of the film and that death is associated with the house that was is in the establishing shot. When the young girl says, ”I didn’t want to move her “ this tells the audience that something bad is due to happen< this also reflects her feeling about the house. The young boy screaming is extremely disturbing because it shows that “Bagul” is trying to take him over, and it’s extremely uncomfortable for the audience to watch. The father says, “We have to leave here now” showing that the situation as gone to far.
Mise en scene:
The props used are what the audience except to see in see in a horror film. The axe and knifes reflect that there is a battle. The axe is being dragged across the floor suggesting that a child is carrying it because it is to heavy for them to lift. At the start of the trailer, good lighting is being used to show that every thing is happy and calm, however as the trailer progresses the lighting dims, and it is mostly dark which gives a true representation of what the film is about and creates a scarier atmosphere. The trailer is set in and around a normal detached house, but it is not completely normal in the film, which makes the situation more realistic of supernatural activity happening in a normal house. The antagonist is dressed in a long dark cloak, which gives a sense of mystery and fear, as it’s not everyday that you see somebody wearing a dark cloak. As for the family, they dress like a generic modern family, items such as: jewellery, jumpers, trainers-shirts etc.
Sound:
During the opening of the trailer, non-diegetic sound is not used, the non-diegetic sound mostly occurred when the antagonist is shown this was to build suspense and create a fearful environment for the viewer. Also the dialogue from the film is used extremely effectively to create even more suspense. A distorted noise is also used to represent the film projector in the movie, which is a vital prop in the film.
Camera:
Within the trailer a variety of camera shots were used to create an effect or to communicate with the audience e.g. the establishing shot was a wide angled zooming shot of the house in the dark, this created the feeling that you (the audience) was actually entering the house. During the trailer there was a lot of over the shoulder shots when the father was watching the tapes and when he was using his laptop.
There was also the use of a lot of close ups, to show the detailed facial expressions of the family during times of fear and anxiousness.
Editing:
The trailer in the beginning used a fade to black transition to show a steady pace in the trailer. As the equilibrium was broken there were conventional quick cuts to increase the drama. Digital effects were used to enhance the horror, such as the flash of a camera creating a bright light with a warm glow afterwards, towards the end of the trailer there was quick fade to black cuts to show any sudden movements on screen, it created a powerful ending because of the immediate darkness on screen.
Typography:
The typography in the trailer is directed to the audience, it does this by using language such as ‘you’. This makes you fear the unknown being (bagul) as much as the family on screen does, even though he is a fictional character. During the trailer it also says ‘nothing can save you’ this shows that there is no escape from his spirit. The font is ‘sinister in itself as it gives the appearance that each letter is bleeding. Adding to this the background could represent stone giving the impression they are gravestones adding to the haunted feeling.
Target audience:
From watching this trailer, I feel that this film targets 25-35 year olds. This is because this is the age period that most people aim to start a family, although the trailer contains young children, I believe they would not enjoy it due to the jump scares and may become very scared.

The mid shot of the walker is taken in low lighting which create a dark and relatively gloomy feel, however u can still see every detail of the picture. However there is lighting above the walker to highlight all the make features on her face and head. There is a lack of nvc in this photography as most of the walkers face is covered by make up and special effects ,however from the eye contanct that the walker is giving it creates a feel of awkwardness. The magazine has a heavy focus on the subjects appearance and make up, the lack of clothes connotes exposure and a lifeless attitude.
